Spring 2018 Youth Volunteer Fair at Ridgway Secondary School

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, the Ridgway Secondary School is hosting its second Youth Volunteer Fair to connect middle and high school students to nonprofits from around the community. This one-hour event from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m. is a great opportunity for nonprofits to share information about your nonprofit and volunteer needs.

Not only do students make enthusiastic volunteers, engaging them in your nonprofit activities can spread your message further through their families and friends. As this article, 5 Tips for Recruiting Young Volunteers, points out: "No matter what your volunteering program does, there are ways to incorporate young people into it and benefit from their energy, ideas and skills." (Click on the article title to read more.)

While some projects and tasks are not suitable for youth volunteers, most nonprofits should not hesitate to reach out to pre-teens and teens. All you need is a strategy for when, where and how to get them involved, whether it be once a week, once a month or once a quarter. As this article, 8 Tips for Hosting Youth Volunteers, says, "Don't hesitate! Just keep a few tips in mind."

The Youth Volunteer Fair at Ridgway Secondary School is a dedicated time where all middle and high school students will get out of class to take time in the cafeteria to get information about our local nonprofits and you volunteer needs. At the Fall 2017 fair, 13 nonprofits participated and reported success with meeting enthusiastic volunteer prospects and educating youth about their missions.

The school will provide each registered nonprofit with a table and two chairs, to put up displays, flyers, sign up sheets, and other materials/supplies that inform students and help them understand how they can help their community by getting involved. While Ridgway Secondary School does not require volunteer service of all students, many students need to get volunteer hours for other organizations inside and outside of school like the National Honor Society and the Juvenile Diversion Program.

If you are interested in having a representative (or two) from your nonprofit at the fair, please fill out and return the online registration form by May 4. There is a $15 fee to offset fair organization expenses. The Ridgway Area Chamber of Commerce as a co-sponsor of the event will pay the fee for nonprofit chamber members, as well as provide giveaway items at the fair.
