Outdoor Adventure

Intense landscapes, rare water resources and crisp, clear air – Ridgway, Colorado has the elements to create great adventures and amazing true stories.

4WD, ATV, Dirtbiking

From tough singletrack to scenic off-road byways crossing the San Juan Mountains, 4-wheel drive roads and trails abound for every level of driver or rider. Go it alone or with guides who love to share their knowledge of the San Juans’ geology, flora, fauna, and colorful stories. The following businesses offer guided tours, self-drive rentals, horseback rides, guided nature hikes, and more. Contact High Country 4×4 at the KOA 970-325-4736 – Colorado West Jeep Tours at coloradowestjeeps.com, Switzerland of America at soajeep.com, and San Juan Scenic Jeep Tours at ourayjeeptours.com.

Remember, if you are going to head off on a backcountry road: Know the road and conditions or find out from a local expert. While some mountain passes like Owl Creek Pass Road are fairly gentle dirt roads with easy rides for most cars, even these routes can become difficult or dangerous during or after an intense storm. Other roads are known for their narrow, steep and boulder-strewn characters and are only meant for motorbikes, jeeps or other appropriate four-wheel drives and non-motorized transportation. Wherever you plan to go, make sure you pick up a good guidebook and maps, plus bring sufficient food and water. Cell service is not always reliable on the remote routes so don't depend on it, and just like when hiking into the wilderness, be sure to let someone back in town know where you're headed.
