Ridgway-Ouray Community Council named RACC June 2022 Member of the Month

Ridgway-Ouray Community Council (ROCC) is being recognized as Ridgway Area Chamber of Commerce Member of the Month in June. The Member of the Month program is an ongoing effort by the chamber to provide the community and visitors with information about businesses and organizations in the area and promote patronage of local resources and small, independent companies and nonprofits.

What is Ridgway-Ouray Community Council?

ROCC is a nonprofit community organization with a mission to build, nourish and protect the healthy spirit of our community. ROCC is dedicated to quality-of-life issues that will shape the future of Ouray County. ROCC works to enhance Ouray County's quality of life through education, protection of the environment and promotion of social justice.

What are your main long-term activities?

Long-term activities include working towards a clean energy economy, fighting to protect Ouray County's high alpine zone, advocating for affordable housing, and collaborating on regional and statewide issues such as oil and gas, air quality and public lands.

What are current initiatives that ROCC is working on?

Recent initiatives have included coordinating with the Forest Service and San Juan Mountain Association to promote the "Save the Blues" campaign that aims to protect the Blue Lakes area from abuse and overuse. We have been instrumental in protecting Ouray County's dark sky asset.

What is happening with the Save the Blues campaign?

As the forest service continues with developing policies, ROCC will once again be supporting their efforts and helping to staff trailhead education stations with volunteers who share Leave No Trace principles. The objective is to make visitors aware of recreational practices that limit negative impacts to public lands, as well as making people safer and increase good etiquette.

What do  you wish more people knew about ROCC?

ROCC is a democratically-run organization with regularly scheduled meetings and election of officers. Work is done primarily within committees including clean energy, land use, social justice, dark skies, and public lands.

How can people get involved in ROCC projects?

People can join us as members and participate in committees of interest.

What do you value from being a Ridgway Chamber member?

We value chamber membership to support the community and the exposure it provides for our organization.
