San Juan Skijoring Celebrates 10th Anniversary With Biggest Weekend Yet

San Juan Skijoring

RIDGWAY, Colo. — San Juan Skijoring is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with an action-packed weekend full of high-speed competition in the unique sport that combines horseback riding along with traditional winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Join the community of Ridgway for a weekend of with big crowds, incredible live music, and small-town community celebration all taking place this Friday, January 9th through Sunday, January 11th at the Ouray County 4H Events Center in Ridgway.

New to this year, the event kicks off on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the Novice and Snowboard Lite competition at no cost. A pre-party for the new Friday Night Lights will begin at 4pm with the event itself beginning at 6pm. Enjoy live music by Sean Deland and the Western Slope Band beginning at 9pm.

San Juan Skijoring will once again bring together elite athletes from across the region and beyond. This year’s event will feature 420 teams competing over three days, with participants traveling from six different states. Many of those who choose to compete in the skijoring event say that the highlights of the weekend are primarily the camaraderie shared among the competitors, both on and off the track, as well as the unique experience of combining personalities of typical elevation winter athletes and the ranching community.

“My favorite event is the Twisted Switch,” says San Juan Skijoring founder Richard Weber III. “This is where the rider and skier have to switch half way down the track.”

San Juan Skijoring will include regular sport events such as the Twisted Switch and always thrilling Gap Jump and add slope-style to both competitions on Sunday. Awards ceremonies will take place each night depending on the competition taking place during the day. Friday and Saturday these ceremonies will be held at the Ouray County 4H Center, on Sunday they will be held at the Ouray Elks Lodge in Ouray.

To match the energy on the course, San Juan Skijoring will host seven live bands throughout the weekend, including two full concerts inside the 4H Center on both Friday and Saturday nights after the races and award ceremonies. Organizers have also hinted there may also be a few surprises up their sleeves so come and find out in person.

Adding to the excitement, this year’s competition will award $52,000 in prize money, making it one of the largest purses in the sport of skijoring.“Every single minute of the weekend is something to look forward to,” said Richard Weber III “San Juan Skijoring strives to make every moment as action-packed as possible.”

Organizers emphasize that the event’s success would not be possible without the continued support of volunteers and sponsors. “It truly takes a village,” organizers shared. “Their hands-on support and commitment are what make this incredible event possible year after year.”

As San Juan Skijoring marks a decade of racing, music, and community spirit, organizers promise that this milestone year will be the biggest and boldest yet.
